The Founding Story
Three chapters that explain how a Sunday-league side from a shipyard town became a Category Two academy, a regional women's side and a community trust reaching every primary school in the borough.
1947
A handful of welders, riveters and apprentices from the Ainslie shipyards met in the back room of the Crown & Anchor on a wet February evening and agreed to form a club. They borrowed a pitch off the Cooperage Lane allotments, dyed cotton sheets green and white for their first kit, and entered the Northern Working Men's League that autumn. The club has been in the town ever since.
2022
The new East Stand opened on the August 2022 bank holiday weekend, lifting Greenwood Stadium to a 9,250 capacity and giving the club its first covered family section, a press gantry and accessible viewing platforms on every level. It was the biggest single change to the ground since the terraces were concreted in 1963.
Today
The senior men's side plays in the National League North; the women's side competes in the FA Women's National League Division One North and was promoted to the regional Championship in 2023 and 2024. The academy fields teams from U-7 through U-18 across 14 age groups and is rated Category Two by the FA.
Two on-pitch pipelines
A Category Two academy that has produced 14 professional contracts since 2018, and a women's side that has gone up in back-to-back seasons — both pathways sit inside the same building at Greenwood.
The Academy
From U-7 Saturday mornings to the U-18s who travel to category-one opposition every other week, the academy pathway runs straight through the Greenwood training ground and into the first-team dressing room.
The Women's Team
The women's side now sits in the regional Championship and trains three nights a week at the Greenwood Community Pitch, with a dedicated under-21s side feeding the senior squad.
Boys' Pathway
The boys' development phase runs U-7 through U-16 on weekend mornings; the professional development phase (U-17 and U-18) trains four nights a week alongside the first-team coaching staff.
Girls' Pathway
The Community Trust runs free FA Wildcats centres across the borough, and competitive girls' teams play from U-12 upwards, feeding the women's under-21s and senior side.
My grandad queued for a shirt in 1948. My dad poured concrete on the terraces in 1963. I serve programmes on the Cooperage Lane turnstile on Saturdays, and my granddaughter leads the U-9s out on Sunday morning. Four generations, same ground, same club.

The people behind the badge
Long before the team sheet is printed and long after full-time, these are the volunteers, coaches and parents keeping the green and white in the town.
The Supporters' Trust
The Trust runs the programme stall, the away-travel coaches, the family section and the half-time draw. Every Trust member holds one co-operative share in the club, voted on at the AGM each November.
The Community Trust
The Community Trust is the club's charity arm: free weekly coaching in 22 local primary schools, disability pan-disability sessions on Sunday mornings, and the holiday camps that have reached 19,400 young people in 2023 alone.
The Academy Pathway
Fourteen academy graduates have signed professional contracts at clubs across the EFL and the National League since 2018. The pathway is rated Category Two by the FA and feeds directly into the first-team dressing room at Greenwood.
